Approved: Brisbane City Council – House Raise and Build Under, Traditional Building Character Overlay (Petrie Terrace)

Brisbane City Council has approved a house raise and build under project at Petrie Terrace, on a site within the Traditional Building Character Overlay.

The proposal involved raising the existing dwelling and building in underneath to create additional living space, along with a new carport and deck extension. Because the property falls within a character overlay, the application also triggered early referral responses for amenity and aesthetic impact, and for design and siting, both of which needed to demonstrate the proposal wouldn’t compromise the character of the street or the locality.

Character overlay sites bring their own layout of constraints on top of a standard house raise. Council is looking closely at how the new work reads against the existing house and the surrounding streetscape, not just whether the numbers stack up.
